115. T.D. Kelsey Etched Winchester Model 1873 Rifle, .44-40 cal., full octagon barrel, full length magazine. Early third model made in 1882. Fine bore, very good plus overall with the finish having turned a dark plum blue brown patina. Forearm has an excellent repair which is barely visible- otherwise walnut appears solid with normal handling wear. Traces of case colors are visible on the hammer and lever. Sights include a period replacement front and a Marlin buckhorn rear. Crescent buttplate. The left side of the frame contains etchings of a bull elk with initials 'T.D.K.' along with a bighorn sheep. The right side contains a bull Bison and a standing grizzly bear. (It is interesting to note that these same four animals were etched onto an 1895 Winchester by C. M. Russell in 1913.) Provenance with this gun attributes this artistry to T. D. Kelsey who is a highly accomplished and prolific sculptor. His website is most interesting. We are proud to offer this truly unique 1873.
